Stabat Mater - not by Pergolesi for once
If Wikipedia is correct, it was Josquin Desprez who created the first (known) musical setting of the Stabat Mater in 1480. Since then and up to the present day, numerous composers have taken on this text. The composition by the Argentinian composer José Luis Larzabal had its premiere last Saturday in St. Peter's Church in Vienna.
The composer, who was previously unknown to me, works primarily as a choirmaster, conductor and singing teacher in his home country and has already received several awards in his home country. His compositions include an oratorio, several cantatas (including one dedicated to Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu), a guitar concerto, masses and chamber music works. The "Stabat Mater" was written in 2019, but only had its premiere now.
José Luis Larzabal combines the traditional text of the Stabat Mater from the European Middle Ages with his South American world. The prologue of the one-hour work, Veni creator spiritus, is reminiscent of Gregorian chants, and the rest of the music ranges from echoes of the Baroque with continuo to Italian opera and South American sounds. The fugal choirs are particularly striking. With this work, Larzabal builds a bridge between different cultures, times and continents. The Stabat Mater is composed for four soloists, a four-part mixed choir and a string orchestra supplemented by two woodwinds.
It may be due to the acoustics of the church in combination with my seat in the front row that I found the sound balance to be less than optimal. In particular, the precisely singing choir (German-Hispanic-American Project Choir) seemed oversized compared to the orchestra (Vienna Classic Orchestra). Of the four soloists, Lupe Larzabal (alto) with his beautiful voice and Aris Argiris, known in Vienna from the Volksoper, with his powerful baritone, stood out; Luis Fernando Piedra was a tenor with a secure high note, and Chryso Makariou completed the quartet with his bright soprano.
I would like to hear this Stabat Mater again in a different setting to gain a deeper insight.
The large composition was followed by a guitar concerto by the composer and conductor Martin Palmeri, also from Argentina, who was also the musical director of this church concert, with the soloist Florencia Schröder. A pleasant composition in three movements with quotes and variations from The Magic Flute in the third movement.
